Remember the days of the carousel rides at the street fairs that visited your town? We would beg our parents to let us go, and when they took us, we ate cotton candy and popcorn, rode the carousel, the bumper cars, the teacup ride and the ferris wheel over and over. What a magical time we’d have!
There were so many different animals on the carouse! Horses, of course, but also a giraffe, lion, swan, and tiger. Once there was even a pig! I always chose the horse with the flying mane and tail, one hoof held high in a prance, his mouth open and his eyes sparkling. Oh, the dreams I dreamed on that steed! I was a damsel being carried away by a white knight, or sometimes I was the white knight.
When my kids were small, we took them to street fairs, too. They rode the same rides and ate the same food, and we lived our childhoods over through them, just as I suspect our parents did with us. But now there are theme parks, with rides much more exciting than any street faire could hope to present, and with every kind of food and beverage you can possibly imagine. But I wonder if the kids will remember the magic of it all, or will they just chalk it up to another day of entertainment? Will they relive their childhoods when they are grown and they take their own kids to the theme park, or has it become so common that the magic is lost?
